The biography of the American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who played a significant part in the creation of the atomic bomb.
Oppenheimer is an IMAX-shot epic drama written and directed by Christopher Nolan that immerses viewers in the heart-pounding conundrum of the mysterious man who must risk destroying the world in order to rescue it.
Emily Blunt plays Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, a scientist and botanist and the wife of Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer in the film. General Leslie Groves Jr., head of the Manhattan Project, is played by Oscar-winner Matt Damon, while Robert Downey, Jr., who helped form the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, is portrayed by Lewis Strauss.
Florence Pugh, who was nominated for an Academy Award® for her portrayal of psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, is joined on screen by Benny Safdie as theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano as chemist Robert Serber, and Josh Hartnett as pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.
Nolan reteams with actor, writer, and director Kenneth Branagh (who has been nominated for eight Academy Awards) in Oppenheimer. Oscar winner Rami Malek also stars.
Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Dylan Arnold (Halloween trilogy), David Krumholtz (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises) are among the cast members.
The film is based on Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin’s Pulitzer Prize–winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven of Atlas Entertainment are the film’s producers.
Oppenheimer is shot in a variety of film formats, including IMAX® black and white analog photography for the first time, and IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film.
More than $5 billion has been made from Nolan’s films, which include Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception, and The Dark Knight trilogy, which has earned Nolan 11 Oscars and 36 nominations, including two for Best Picture.
