Inside Out 2-Box Office Preview: Tracking for $90M U.S. Opening

Pixar and Disney are riding a wave of excitement as “Inside Out 2” prepares to make a splash at the global box office this weekend. The film has received a last-minute boost in tracking, with Hollywood’s National Research Group now predicting a domestic opening of $90 million, up from an initial estimate of $85 million. Despite Disney’s more conservative forecast of $80 million to $85 million, the higher projection suggests “Inside Out 2” could achieve the biggest opening of the year so far, surpassing “Dune: Part II” which debuted at $82.5 million.

The international market also looks promising, with the film already generating $4.9 million from its first eight markets. This strong start overseas bodes well for the film’s global performance.

“Inside Out 2” aims to inject some much-needed vitality into a sluggish box office, which has seen a significant 24 percent drop in year-over-year revenue. The film’s positive reception, marked by a 92 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, is a testament to its potential success. Directed by Kelsey Mann and featuring a stellar voice cast led by Amy Poehler, the sequel explores the complexities of adolescence with a fresh set of emotions, including Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment.

The movie’s release is particularly significant for Pixar, which has faced challenges in recent years, including the decision by Disney’s former regime to send several Pixar films directly to streaming. A strong performance by “Inside Out 2” could signify a revival for the animation giant and the industry at large.

Adding to the excitement, Illumination and Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” is also tracking well, with expectations of a $100 million-plus debut over the Fourth of July holiday. This family-friendly film, set to open on July 3, is predicted by some tracking services to reach $110 million in its five-day launch.

The summer box office is further bolstered by Disney and Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” another tentpole anticipated to draw substantial audiences.

As “Inside Out 2” hits theaters, the enthusiasm is palpable. With a beloved franchise returning and an all-star cast, the film is set to captivate audiences both young and old, potentially marking a high point in an otherwise challenging year for cinemas. This weekend could be a turning point, offering a much-needed boost for Pixar and animated films as a whole.
