Farrey Movie Review:

Director Soumendra Padhi created Jamtara, a smalltown Indian fraud drama. So we knew he could tell a con story. In a prestigious school, two poor kids help their wealthier pals pass exams for money. Apparently, Bad Genius is the 2017 Thai film that inspired it.

A kind warden (Ronit Roy) and his caring wife (Juhi Babbar Soni) raised Niyati (Alizeh Agnihotri) in an orphanage. She has always been a brilliant student and aced her 10th exams, earning her a full scholarship for two years at India’s best institution. She becomes the top student there, competing only with another impoverished youngster, Aakash (Sahil Mehta), who received the same scholarship. Their excitement is complete when the school principal (Shilpa Shukla) tells them they have been picked to take the Oxford University entrance test, which could lead to a full scholarship.

Niyati befriends affluent but academically weak Chhavi (Prasanna Bisht). After Chhavi begs her to help with examinations, Niyati does it for friendship and then for money. Donations go to her orphanage, not her. Students can get into elite foreign colleges through a global entrance exam. The rich youngsters pay Niyati and Aakash exorbitant amounts to crack it. The two genius students devise the perfect approach to achieve that aim. However, both risk losing their innocence. The film hinges on whether they follow the right road or pursue wealth.

The first part of the film, which introduces Niyati to privileged youngsters, flows well. As lost as Alice in Wonderland. She cannot believe Chhavi lives in such a large house, has so many toys, and has a chef to satisfy her. Her desire for such a lifestyle is nearly tangible. Scam drama intensifies in the second half. The film becomes a morality play as the director explains Niyati and Aakash’s decision to commit crimes and their battles with it. We are attracted into their world and want them to do the right thing at any costs.

Prassana Bisht, who portrays Chavi, and Zeyn Shaw, who plays Prateek, both performed well. Both take their privilege for granted and are fickle friends. Sahil Mehta, who plays Aakash, is a camera-ready talent. Throughout the film, Alizeh Agnihotri makes spectators root for her character. She makes an assured debut as a finished product.
