In order to compete in a tournament in Santiago, Chile, a rugby team hailing from Montevideo, Uruguay boarded Flight 571 on October 13, 1972. The plane went down in the barren heights of the Andes while the passengers were traveling through the icy mountains on their way to their final destination. The temperatures in those mountains can drop to 40 degrees below zero. On impact, there were twelve fatalities and several more persons suffered life-threatening injuries. In the Andes, only 29 people managed to survive to see another day. The search for the passengers was called off after many planes dedicated to search and rescue had explored the area, and it was assumed that they had perished. After approximately two and a half months, there were a total of sixteen people who survived. But what exactly took place throughout those three weeks?

Society of the Snow Netflix

Society of the Snow is a film directed by J.A. Bayona, winner of the Gaud and Goya awards for best director (The Impossible, A Monster Calls), that recounts the very impossible account of the Andes airplane catastrophe. The Orphanage, which Bayona directed in 2007, will be the director’s first Spanish feature picture since then, and it is scheduled to play the closing night of the 2023 Venice picture Festival. This story is not for people who are easily frightened. For those who are not familiar with it (and who have not watched the 1993 film Alive, which also dramatizes the accident), it features graphic representations of the disaster and what the victims had to do to keep from starving to death, including cannibalism. This story is not for those who are easily frightened.
